New Years {Stay In} Outfit

New Years Stay In Outfit

New Years Stay In Outfit by krista-allmond-montalvo featuring Mossimo

I'm staying in this New Years with my family.  We're going to play games, eat finger foods and drink some wine & sparkling grapefruit cocktails.  I want to look festive but be comfortable.  I decided that I would throw on a yellow scarf for my bling.  If you have a sparkly yellow one that would be even better.

Happy New Years Y'all

My Blue Christmas

I was bebopping along with my happy self and then life happened.  The month of December has been a challenging one for me & my happiness.  There has been a lot of obstacles that have contributed.  It all started after Giving Thanks on Thanksgiving.  Andy, Evelyn and myself came down with a stomach bug and then a nasty cold that is still lingering in Evelyn.  Andy's insane work schedule was a huge scramble of getting second homeowners' new flooring before Christmas.  He worked very long hours every day until Dec. 23 so he wasn't around much at all.  Georgia's kitten was run over in front of our house and then a week later, I had to make the decision to put my 16 year old dog, India down.  And then throw in homeschooling three little girls and not to mention the short, dark days of winter.

It just didn't feel like Christmas.  I was so sad about India which was making it hard to sleep and the girls said I was so grumpy.  Andy could barely make it through dinner without falling asleep from exhaustion.  We were late getting decorations up, and we couldn't even muster the energy to go look at the Christmas lights.  I had a long list of handmade presents that I was going to make for people and the girls.  Well, that list was thrown out the window pretty fast.  I managed to make a couple of things but it was more of a Should duty.  This month just felt hard and unbalanced.

Why am I telling you all this?

Because that's how life goes.  All of a sudden you are tested.  Plus, it helps when you know that you aren't alone.  I have learned a lot about myself over the last few years.  I think this was a little challenge to see what I'm made of.  A challenge for Andy and myself.

Here were my areas of difficulty:

How do you stay balanced when you feel sad?
How do you practice joy when you don't feel it?
How do you rely own yourself to be strong?
How do you keep your mind focused on good thoughts when you are sad instead of remembering bad ones?
How do you motivate when you're feeling so low?
How to see things differently when you are in a bad spot?

I answered some of these questions on my own.

The first thing that I have learned is to be aware.  Be aware of what you are experiencing and to feel it.  Don't try to not feel and wear a mask of happiness.  But you also don't want to wallow in misery either.  Just name it and announce it to yourself.  I told the girls that yes, I was sorry that I was grumpy but that I was sad.  So, I decided to let homeschool be more fun this month and flexible.  There is a lesson in everything and to not set myself to fail since I was feeling blue.

I think this time of year is the "dark" time of year for a reason.  It's a time where you naturally turn inward and hibernate a little.  Maybe that's why a lot of people have a hard time rejoicing when they feel like pulling in.  I know that I always feel like living in a cabin far far away in the woods with no contact with civilization during the winter time.  So, I decided to recognize that possibility and embrace it.

I also realized how much I rely on Andy with the girls & for myself and how hard it is to not have help.  I also saw how difficult it is to be strong and positive for the whole family when Andy was too worn out to give anymore.  I knew that this was only for a short time in the scheme of things and to be thankful for his hard work and self-sacrifice. I also decided that this Christmas might look different from others and that's ok.  Last year, Andy had a broken back for Christmas and was in so much pain.  I am thankful that he has recovered and our holiday doesn't look like that one.

Overall, we have made it to the end of this month and the end of this year with lots of love and wonderful memories.

I made it through this month by:

recognizing my feelings,
allowing myself to be sad,
giving compassion to myself,
changing my perception,
showing gratitude,
being flexible,
and knowing this to shall pass.

Be kind to yourself. Love goes a long way.  And listen to your authentic voice in your soul because it never fails you. You already have the wisdom if you will

Staying in this New Year's? Cocktail, Movie & Game Ideas

Source
Staying in this New Year's Eve?  I'm not sure why but new year's has just never been a thing for Andy and I.  It's pretty typical that most years even pre-baby years we were asleep before midnight.  This year we are yet again staying in but we will be celebrating in our comfy clothes, our beloved family, some games & cocktails!

Here are some ideas that we are thinking of this year:

GAMES

1)  Apples to Apples.  It's a fun game that the whole family can play.  It doesn't take much to learn and is easy to play with distractions going on.

2)  Cards against Humanity.  If your children are asleep or it's just adults around, I suggest this game. It's like apples to apples except it's raunchy and inappropriate.  A thumbs up for me!!

3) Dominos.  This is a timeless game that you can play that takes some strategy.  There are several different ways to play this game.

Inspiring MOVIES

1) Life of Pi

2) The Way

3) Slumdog Millionaire

4) Life is Beautiful

5) Julie & Julia

6) Little Miss Sunshine

7) Life as a House

8) The Blind Side

9) Eat. Pray. Love

10) Don Juan DeMarco

The COCKTAIL

1) You can never go wrong with wine.  I suggest a box!

2)  Here's a great mocktail list.  HERE.

3)  Champagne Ginger Punch.  Recipe HERE.

4)  Grapefruit Mojitos.  Recipe HERE.

Have you heard of Etip iPhone Ski Gloves?

My mom got for Christmas from her husband some Etip gloves from North Face.  They have conductive fingertips so you can answer your touch screen phones without having to take off your gloves.  How cool is that?  I had never even heard of them before.

You can get everyday type of gloves or ski ones.  I would want ski ones because it is such a hassle taking them off on the lift or when you are skiing.  Here are the ski ones that I want below.

They are a pretty penny too for $120.

SO, I thought couldn't I find some conductive material and sew it on my own gloves.

And YEP, you can do so easy yourself.

Here's a DIY video:

Here's another DIY tutorial with sites that sell conductive thread :

I can't wait to get my gloves hooked up!

A Handmade Giveaway for a {New} Marmie

I am so excited to finally make almost all the changes to my blog.  Since I have been in the process of creating a simpler family life, it has brought me to a new place with Marmie too.  I am not going to focus on resale of Marmie but instead creating things for my family and friends and sharing them with you.  I may give away things to you all here and there but overall I love having my blog as a creative outlet that's just for me.

I have been thinking for days about my new design and what it would look like.  I dreamed about using Georgia's artwork, including a bluebird and some yellow somehow.  The background of the letters for Marmie is one of my favorite pieces of art that she whipped up one afternoon with some scraps of trash.    I wanted to use a bluebird because it's my reminder that I use to keep me grounded and full of gratitude.  Every time I see one, I tell myself that I am exactly where I ought to be and life is beautiful.  Yellow is just a color that makes me happy.  Andy always tells me that I am solar powered.  It's so true.  I don't think I could survive outside of sunny Colorado!

In honor and celebration of my new focus and me listening to my inner self.  I am promoting my new[ness] with a great big giveaway.  Each week during Christmas I will list another awesome handmade gift by me that will complete a whole ensemble.  I will also throw in some other yummy goodies from my kitchen and maybe some cool stuff from some other local artisan.

All the ways to get more entries are listed via Rafflecopter and through my Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Pinterest accounts.  And HERE on my blog of course!

There are so many ways to win!  Please share the word about the New Marmie.

1)  The first gift is a Yarn bombed Antler long necklace in shades of purple on a vintage block chain in gold with a hand stamped Coloradolove charm.

2) The second gift is a loose, arm-knitted color block (black/oatmeal) infinity scarf in a soft wool blend chunky yarn.

3)  The third gift is a one size fits all Tunic Sweater.  It is a loose, sheer knit with a metallic sheen.  The burgundy and black stripes are perfect for the Holidays.  It has tapered edges on the sides on the bottom.

4)  The last gift is a pair of Seattle Grey Knit Travel Pants.  Super comfy and soft knit with a fold over yoga waistband.  They are a size S/M.  Great for lounging in the house, traveling or wearing out & about.  A wide leg gives that flounce when you walk and the forgiving sizing makes them an easy fit.

Gift Ideas for Womanly Things: *coming from the girl who wanted an over-the-door ironing board at age 9

I've never been the type of girl who ever wanted fufu girl stuff, but I always wanted quality over quantity.  I also have always loved a thing to do instead of an actual wrapped present.  Here are some highlights of some of my favorite Christmas gifts as a child:

Horse Jumps, a horse, a sheep, a stand-up mixer, a guitar, a piano, an ironing board & iron, an antique cabinet, bathroom sink faucets, a typewriter

This list makes me chuckle.  Gotta love some sink faucets for Christmas (good one Mama, wink wink)!!

Here are some gift ideas for women for the men who I KNOW are procrastinating until next week to figure out what they are getting.  Yeah, it's okay just make it something thoughtful and something that shows you actually read this blog to find out a cool gift idea.  A woman can tell when you run into the store and yell wrap it up and the girl isn't even sure what you are referring to!  Yes, Andy has done something similar in years past.  I hope he takes the time to read this post.  He gives great gifts though when he thinks about it.

Marmie's Gift Guide 2013 for a Lady

* My beloved KitchenAid mixer finally bit the dust.  It was my first Mother's Day gift from my husband, Andy, and I used it all the time.  Once I started making bread, it just couldn't handle the workload and the motor burnt out pretty fast.  I started reading lots of reviews, and I am ready to own a Bosch Mixer.  I really love this review from Topsy Turvy.  They sell the 800 Watt Bosch at our new local store called Straw Hat Farm Store.

* I love making bread.  I started and feed my own sourdough starter.  Read about how to start your own HERE.  I would love to be able to grind my own flour with this beautiful wooden grain grinder from Nutrimill.  These are also for sale at Straw Hat Farm Store mentioned above.

* I really want some linen sheets.  I think that they will be really warm in the winter and super cool in the summer.  Who doesn't love an all-season product?  Plus sheets are a gift you can both enjoy.  I am a big fan of Eileen Fisher and here are her line at Garnet Hill.  Here's a good write up about them from A Cup of JO.

* Since I live in Colorado, you can never have too many coats.  This year I have been eyeing an affordable shearling coat.  Here is a good choice at an affordable price from MinkPink.

And Here's the $$$ one that I want!!

* A trip is always a good idea.  Here are some of my picks:  a rustic cabin in the woods or on a lake, Napa, Seattle, Paris is always a good idea or even several nights in with the kids somewhere else (make sure you plan big on this one fellas)!!  A trip to a big city for the day just to find the perfect pair of jeans for her.  That would be a pretty big deal and you would be a HERO!

* I like good, quality things.  Madewell always comes through with things that I like that are just awesome and last forever.  Plaid and Flannel are really "in" right now and are timeless.  Here are my plaid picks from there: gotta love a classic flannel plaid shirt, yum! a plaid blazer, sweet tartan pants my dear.

* Sweaters are commonplace unless it's a super nice one that she would never buy for herself unless of course she talks herself into deserving it.  I want a camel cashmere sweater that I can pair with my knee length black leather skirt.  Sounds delicious doesn't it like a caramel mocha?

Love this one from Zara
* A really good book.  I love historical fiction.  I also love to dive into a book that takes you to a new place with new friends.  I am just starting the trilogy Chocolat by Joanne Harris.  Buy all three (Chocolat, The Girl with No Shadow & Peaches for Father Francis) then also get the movie Chocolat with a box of really exquisite truffles.

* A steamy photo session from your local photographer.  I recommend Jayna Rosentreter here in Montrose, CO.  Here are some ideas for you:

See more photo ideas HERE

* A good, classy & sexy outfit for a night on the town.  You should rent a tux and get tickets to something.  Head down to your local boutique that she loves to shop at and they will hook you up!  Here in Montrose, CO: SheShe Boutique & Pollux Clothing Company.
the dress:  I love Vivienne Westwood.

the undies: I am digging the lace high waisted.  Reminds me of a pin up girl.

the shoes: You can't go wrong with Jimmy Choo.  You can skip the jewels if you go this route!

Jimmy Choo Anvil
the bag: A little evening bag is just the finishing touch except for Diamonds.  I have been loving the color burgundy.  A vintage bag that you got from her mother or grandmother would be perfect.

Vintage Crocodile Gucci Evening Bag

Well, there's my list for you guys!  Hope you have a fabulous Christmas this year.  But remember, a great gift is a THOUGHTFUL gift even if it's just a coupon book of fun things.

Oh yeah and here's something awesome for you to sign on the Christmas card HERE or HERE or this Good ONE or this one would melt my heart or a funny one.

3D Marshmallow Architecture

I saw a homeschool activity on Pinterest to build shapes and structures using marshmallows and toothpicks.  We were studying 3D and 2D in art so it was the perfect craft to follow up the lesson.  The girls loved it!  And they loved eating the buildings afterwards too!

Here's a great video tutorial on how to draw 3D

Feathered Friend Mobile for Sophia

We finally finished Sophia's mobile for her glittered room make over!  It turned out so adorable.  Sophia said it is way better than what she originally had thought of.  We hung it over the foot of her bed so she could see it when she laid down.

We made little birds from scrap fabrics with this Pattern from Spool.  I love the little stitched ends that Sophia did below.  It makes it even cuter.

This summer we collected a bunch of drift wood at the Ridgway Reservoir along the shoreline.  A couple of months ago when it was still warm, Sophia and I painted her two driftwood branches for her mobile.

I used a round garden plant support to attach the polyester filling to with a thread and a needle.  I just sewing it on.  It's pretty secure that way.  I want to find some little LED lights to put in the cloud too.  We hot glued the birds to the branches and tied them up with some strips of scrap silk that I had.

We went on a nature adventure walk one day near the duck pond to make our Thanksgiving Pinecone Turkeys and also collected bigger feathers for Sophia's mobile.  We glittered up the ends of each feather  and glued pretty little feathers on top of the bigger feathers.  We used different types of ribbons to suspend the feathers at different heights.

It only took us about 5 months to finish it but I am glad we did it and hung it up.  Now I just need to find some twinkle lights for it!

Quiz: Is She a Toxic Friend or Are YOU?

I like taking quizes sometimes.  It makes me feel young for some reason.  I guess it reminds of those times in High School reading my Sixteen Magazine and in college reading Cosmo.  So anyway every now and then I am reading online and see a fun quiz and I take it.

Source

This one is a quiz from Ladies' Home Journal that determines if you have a toxic friend.  But I started thinking about it and decided that maybe people should be taking the quiz for their own benefit.  I've had girlfriends complain about stuff and all the while I am thinking "Yeah, you do the same thing but can't see it".  We all do stuff that we can't see.

I feel very fortunate to not have toxic friends in my everyday life.  I do have some and...some toxic family members.  But, I try to follow Oprah's advice and she says to keep people who lift you higher in your immediate circle of friends.  It really is the way to go!  But sometimes, it is hard to remove people from your life that no longer serve you.  I also think as women we tend to forgive our friend's shortcomings much quicker than men do.  Andy has told me on numerous occasions throughout the years that if he had a friend act like that or talk to him like that - he would NOT be their friend.  I know he has a point but there are so many reasons why I can't or wouldn't just unfriend them.  But as I get a little older I have an easier time weeding out those friends to more of an acquaintance level.

I have had to officially break up with a friend once and a job too.  It was not fun!  But that relationship was so toxic that the quiz and my mother said that there had to be something wrong with me or something that I needed to learn for still being friends with her and still working in a bad job environment.  I know that this is a problem for other women because I see on Pinterest TONS of pins about this subject matter.

So, take the Quiz.  Then retake the Quiz to reflect on yourself.  Now, be honest ladies - don't go sugar coating yourself.

Christmas Gift Ideas for Little Girls - 2 to 9 yrs old

My girls' ages range from 2 to 9 years old.  These are my picks for them this year plus some other favorite ones from years before.  Some are handmade and some are bought locally and some I had to order online.  I try not to go overboard on presents.  I will make them a pretty, fancy dress for Christmas that I will wrap up that will be from Andy and I.  Last year I made them THESE.

Here are Marmie's picks:

The older girls really wanted a life size, weighted baby doll.  I never realized how expensive these are.  I also really like some of the Waldorf ones too but the girls wanted ones that looked realistic.  I liked the price and the sweetness of Paradise Gallery's dolls.
Paradise Gallery Weighted Life Size Baby Doll

Since I have been homeschooling, I need to stock up on some more supplies especially athletic ones.  I asked my girls if they know how to Double Dutch.  They don't do that anymore at schools at least around here.  I know they are going to LOVE it plus you can play all kinds of math games and such using the jumprope.  I got two singles for them ply two big ones for Double Dutch.  You can get these at most sporting good stores.

I also like to balance my girlie things with not so girlie things.  So I got Georgia her first real archery set.  We will also get a hay bale and target paper for the backyard.  I want to make her a little arrow bag to wear.  You can also get this at your local sporting goods store.  And for Sophia, I got her a Pink softball glove and ball.  She is really good at hand eye coordination and this will be a fun & easy way to do something in the yard.

I got this great wooden Waldorf dollhouse with all the furniture years ago when my older girls where really little at an antique store in town.  I put it away once they stopped playing with it and am going to regift it to Evelyn who is 2.  I'm still not sure how I am going to explain Santa re-gifting but I am sure that I can come up with a creative story. Wink wink!

I ordered on etsy some wooden peg dolls that are the same as our family of five.  I am going to decorate them and make little clothes for them to go with the dollhouse.

To go with the whole Waldorf doll theme I saw these handmade play mats too.  I plan on making a little  outdoor scene out of felt that can be rolled and laid out with the dollhouse and dolls.  I think Evelyn will love it.

I pinned this adorable denim humpback whale months ago and decided to make it also for Evelyn.  I had to free hand draw the pattern which is pretty tricky to do.  But it turned out pretty cute.  I want to make one more because the first one came out smaller than anticipated.  I used denim on the top and some charcoal wool for the bottom and little white button eyes.

 I also got:
Gourmet Candies from around the world
Old fashioned lacing/sewing cards
Dress up Princess Bear Wooden Lacing Toy
Matching Game
Labyrinth Game
Chinese Checkers
Prism Wooden Puzzle
Vintage Dressing Table Set (mirror, brush, comb, powder, perfume bottle with perfume)
Jewelry - I got Georgia a necklace with two charms.  One says "Be Brave" and the other one says "You are loved"

Buttermilk Chess Pie - so good for breakfast

I am a big lover of pie.  I love savory and sweet pies.  I decided that I needed a pie fix yesterday so I made a real simple one that is such a classic.  The Chess Pie.  It is like a custard pie except the chess pie is way easier to make because you don't need to heat the milk up like you do in a custard pie.

I like how the Chess pie is so simple.  I make a salted honey pie that's real similar.  It's a classic!  Easy recipe with mellow, feel good flavors.  A slice of Chess Pie is good for dessert or in the morning with a cup of coffee.  I like to
eat mine at room temperature.

Buttermilk Chess Pie

2 c. All purpose flour
1 t salt
2/3 c diced chilled butter
5-7 T chilled water
6 T melted butter
1/2 c sugar
1/2 t salt
1 t vanilla
Pinch nutmeg
3 eggs
2/3 c buttermilk ( sub w/ milk & 1 T vinegar)

In a food processor, pulse flour, salt & butter until it's a pea like size.  Then slowly add water until it just starts to clump together.  Take out of processor and make into two pancakes.  Wrap with Saran Wrap and chill for about 30 minutes.  Roll out one of the discs and fit into a 9" pie dish.  You can use the other for another pie.

In a bowl, combine melted butter, sugar, salt, nutmeg and vanilla.  Whisk in eggs and then add milk.  Pour it into your unbaked pie shell.  Bake at 325 F for about an hour.  It should shake a little but a knife should come out clean when inserted in the middle.

Make sure you let it cool for at least an hour to eat.  It's one of those pies that needs to setup first.

Bon appetit!

Stocking Stuffer Ideas - who wants oranges in their stockings these days

This year for Christmas I decided that I was going to stuff my girls' stockings with famous candies from around the world.  Here is the article that I found to use as a reference. HERE  You can find most of them on Amazon in the gourmet grocery section.

When I was a kid, my mom seemed to sometimes forget about the stockings.  My brother and I always knew because she would dump the fruit and nut bowl into our stockings.  It's so funny looking back on that memory.  We would grab our stockings tote them back into the kitchen and put the oranges, apples and nuts back into the empty bowl.  So funny!  I always loved the little date coupons that she would put in there though.  They were always really good ones like an overnight trip to Charleston with just me &  her or one time it was a day off of school and we went shopping in a big city!  Thanks for the fun times Mama!

Here are my picks for hopefully a memorable stocking this year:

Austria - Mozart Balls: a ball of green pistachio marzipan covered in a layer of nougat is with a dark chocolate coating.

Brazil - Brigadeiro: national truffle.  Here is a recipe to make at home. HERE

Germany -  Kinder Surprise: egg-shaped chocolate shell that has a toy inside.

India - Chimes Mango Ginger Chews: real ginger and pureed mango juice make this chewy candy.

Japan: -  Pocky: cookie sticks dipped in chocolate, strawberry, and flavored toppings.

Peru - Tejas: dulce de leche with dried fruit and nuts covered in a white chocolate coating.

Sweden- Daim Bar: crunchy butter almond bar covered in milk chocolate.

Switzerland - Toblerone: Swiss chocolate in unique triangular shape with nougat, almonds and honey.

Turkey - Turkish Delight: small cubes of gel made of mostly starch and sugar. It can be filled with various nuts or dried fruits and is usually dusted with icing sugar.

Britain - Maynards Wine Gums: Chewy candies that come in a mixture of 5 shapes, each named after a different type of wine (These are for the adult stockings) and Cadbury Chocolate bars in a wide variety.
