Sourdough Naan & Riata

The girls and I made sourdough Naan the other night with dinner, and it was so awesome.  I can't wait to make it again.  I had a huge plate full of them and we gobbled all of them up.  I even made my own raita to go with it.  I cooked it on my cast iron cook top.  It would be really easy for you all to make too if you don't have a sourdough - just leave it out of the recipe is all that you have to do.  You could also cook it on the grill too.  Here's another cool recipe for naan using garlic.

Sourdough Naan

2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup sourdough starter
1/2 cup milk
1/4 cup plain yogurt
1 t baking powder
pinch of salt
oil (I used melted butter)

Combine all ingredients except for oil.  Knead until the surface of the dough is smooth.  Let it rise until doubled in size (2-3 hours).  Punch it down and divide it into 8 balls.  Roll each piece out to about 1/4" thickness.  Brush with oil or butter and cook on your cast iron surface.  Butter and Flip when it starts to bubble on top and release from cooktop.  Transfer to plate and cook the remaining pieces of dough.  Enjoy!

Raita

1/2 grated cucumber
1 cup plain yogurt
1/4 cup fresh, chopped mint leaves
1 t cumin
1/4 t cayenne (optional if you have kids)
pinch salt

Mix all the ingredients and set aside.  It can be made the day before and refrigerated.
